COLOMBO, SRI LANKA – In a bid to encourage lifelong participation in endurance sports and elevate Sri Lanka’s sporting ecosystem to international standards, a strategic partnership between the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and the IRONMAN 70.3 Colombo international sporting event was officially announced yesterday at a press conference held at the Ministry of Sports.

The press conference was attended by Hon. Sunil Kumara Gamage, Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports; Dr. S. Achchuthan, Director General of Sports; Mr. Priyantha Ekanayake, Chairman of the National Sports Council; Mr. Rajan Thananayagam, Director of Serendib Multisport (Pvt) Ltd and Race Director of IRONMAN 70.3 Colombo; and Mr. Yasas Hewage, Director of Bike and Run Courses.

An International Experience Returning After Six Years

After successful editions in 2018 and 2019, IRONMAN 70.3 Colombo returns to Sri Lanka in 2026 following a six-year hiatus. This year, nearly 1,000 participants and supporters from over 45 countries are expected to attend, alongside a significant number of Sri Lankan athletes.

Active Lifestyle and Health

A primary goal of this partnership is to promote endurance sports such as swimming, cycling, and running as a solution to non-communicable diseases like diabetes and heart disease, which are prevalent in Sri Lanka. The collaboration also aims to facilitate the exchange of knowledge regarding sports medicine and international safety standards, while creating volunteer opportunities for university students and the Youth Corps.

Speaking at the event, Hon. Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage stated: "IRONMAN proves that sport is something that can be pursued throughout one's life regardless of age. This event is a testament to the international confidence placed in Sri Lanka."
